Chain link fencing certainly seems basic and straightforward, but you may be surprised to know how many types and styles exist today. In fact, few people realize that they have more than one option when looking for a chain link fence. Whether you are choosing a fence style for your home, your business or for another application, consider your options before making your final selection. chain link fence contractors
Types of Chain Link Wire Materials
Three basic kinds of wire materials are used in the construction of chain link fence.
- Galvanized or zinc-coated wires come in two types. galvanized after weaving (GAW) or galvanized before weaving (GBW). The main difference is that GBW wires have some wire endings that go un-coated, whereas the GAW wires have some un-coated sections where the wires cross. Both types last for about 12 years, require little to no maintenance and are well-suited for residential applications.
- Aluminum wire material may be a good choice for greater rust and corrosion resistance. It is lightweight, strong and has a long life. It’s also a good choice for anyone who lives in a wet climate. Even in the harshest climates, aluminum can last as long as 25 years.
- Stainless steel may be your best option if you need fencing that is extra durable. It can handle high temperatures, thanks to its high level of alkali resistance. It’s also extremely long-lasting and appropriate for the harshest weather. For the most demanding of applications, commercial or residential, this is the best type of fence wire available today.
Adding an Exterior Treatment or Coating
If you want to coat your fence, paint is the cheapest choice, but it will last no more than five years and it is prone to peeling and cracking. PVC or plastic coating is another option that can make your wire fence more visually appealing. It does not crack or peel easily and it protects against scratches and rust. Even more common today are powder coated chain link systems. This coating involves a moisture-blocking base coat fused to the wire using a thermal heat process. A UV-resistant polyester topcoat is added to seal the wire. This coating is extremely durable, long-lasting and virtually maintenance free. This is also an excellent means for dressing up the appearance of basic wire mesh.
Mesh Size/Wire Gauge
Wire mesh refers to the amount of open space between the wires. The size of chain link mesh is closely associated with security. In other words, the higher the security requirement, the smaller the mesh size should be. Wire gauge refers to the thickness of the wire itself. Choose a thicker wire to increase fence strength. Remember to consider factors such as purpose, weather and security when choosing your fencing. Some fences are more appropriate for certain conditions and situations than others. Residences, factories and businesses have different needs and will thus require different types of fencing.
It can be hard to decide for yourself which type of fence is best for your needs. Before you make an investment in any fencing product, contact a fence contractor. A professional fence sales and installation company can review your project’s requirements and make recommendations based on your specific needs and chain link fence specifications.
